The Importance of Asset Intelligence, From an Ex-NSA Deputy Director

Because I can never get enough of the East Coast in the fall, I traveled once again to Washington, D.C. On this trip, I met my long-time friend of many decades, mentor, and security industry thought leader, William P. Crowell.

Bill has worn many hats but is perhaps best known for his 30+ years at the National Security Agency (NSA), which include several years as the Deputy Director of the NSA following his appointment by President Clinton. He also flew in a U2 spy plane above 70,000 feet, which is just one of his many amazing adventures.

Bill and I discussed the importance of asset intelligence to proactively enable security and support business operations. As Bill says, “A lot of people believe that security operations is all about hunting for someone that has penetrated your network; it’s a little late if you ask me.”

He shared insights from his experiences in the public and private sectors. He also talked about the necessity of investing in security controls that go beyond detection and response to enable organizations to apply robust incident prevention in the face of today’s most sophisticated threat actors.
